I'm just a girl on a mission - a mission to read many books, run (walk) many miles and ramble about it all!

My main blog is on Tumblr, and I also have companion Facebook, Twitter, and Goodreads pages.

When Mockingbirds Sing by Billy Coffey

When Mockingbirds Sing - Billy Coffey

Thank you Thomas Nelson, Inc via BookSneeze for providing me a copy of this book!

This one takes the "best book I've read this year" spot right now. When I found this book while browsing BookSneeze, I had never heard of the author, but the summary captivated me so I requested it. Upon receiving it, the cover added to my captivity - perfectly beautiful. Now that I've read it I'm overtaken - this is a powerful novel.

Coffey wrote a mesmerizing, heart-pounding...freaking AWESOME book. Okay, so that isn't very "book professional" of me, but I'm almost speechless.

When the story begins readers will immediately be drawn to Leah who is small, painfully shy, yet wonderfully creative. So shy and creative that she's got one friend, the rainbow man, and he's imaginary. Having just moved to a new town, one that is small and has kept to itself for decades, Leah's family is out of sorts - unaccepted.

I loved the voice of this story. Small town, country, casual living - you can just wrap yourself up in this town and feel calm. The writing takes on the slang and dialect of such a town, and it adds to the story's validity as well as to its lovability. However, readers can equally read the possessiveness of the town's people for their own. Outsiders are fear invoking and suspicious.

Faith stands at the heart of this novel. Faith in what can't be seen, faith in what can be seen, but only on the surface, faith in those that aren't the strongest, smartest, or fittest. Faith in a little girl with an intense stutter and an affinity for an invisible friend who's guiding her words and actions to the contradiction and intense aversion of the town's leaders.

The climax of Leah's struggle to get the town to listen and believe comes together in such an intense way that I promise you won't put the book down - you can't. When Mockingbirds Sing>grabs on and there's just no stopping. Each turn of the page brings new excitement, thought, and an undeniable need to finish regardless of sleep, food, or other extraneous activities!!

I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own. I am not compensated for any of my reviews.
