My review (published at Read, Run, Ramble):

Thank you Mulholland Books via Netgalley for providing me with an early copy of this book!

Whew – this was a twisty, turn-y, chaotic ride! Lots of characters, lots of POV switches, and definitely lots of crazy.

Gaby is a homicide detective and she’s looking for a major sicko in this novel. All while managing her life and raising a daughter solo. I liked Gaby. Beukes wrote her well – not overdone on the female badass side of things (aka she didn’t try too hard to make her the non-traditional female role – it came off natural and it worked). Readers see the story through Gaby’s POV as well as her daughter’s, the killer’s, a homeless man’s, and a washed up journalist’s. They are all unique views and all lead to different ends while also intertwining at just the right time.

The killer, let’s talk about the killer. Beukes weaves in some serious psychological and paranormal twists. Take the first body, which is that of a young boy that has been somehow fused with a deer. Major freak points right from the beginning. Later dreams, doors, art, and voices all combine for serious horror-like fun.

Reviewing this one in October seems fitting. If you want to freak yourself out a little, pick up this book and dive into the minds of the characters in Broken Monsters.

I was provided with an ARC of this book by the publisher in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own. I am not compensated for any of my reviews.
